Steve Phillips: Toronto Blue Jays holding their own in AL East despite difficult start

The Toronto Blue Jays start to the season hasn’t been good or bad. It has been just okay. Their depth has been tested in the outfield with the injuries to George Springer and Teoscar Hernandez testing positive for COVID-19. The pitching was thin heading into the season, and has been further compromised with injuries to Kirby Yates (elbow surgery), Robbie Ray (elbow bruise), Ryan Borucki (side effects from the COVID-19 vaccine), Tyler Chatwood (elbow inflammation), Julian Merryweather (strained oblique), Ross Stripling (forearm tightness), Jordan Romano (right ulnar neuritis) and Nate Pearson (strained groin). Given all of that, a 6-7 record, is not so bad – especially considering the difficulty of the team’s early schedule.

Who s Hot, Who s Cold: Blue Jays Pitchers

Who’s Hot, Who’s Cold: Blue Jays Pitchers Share this story Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports The Blue Jays have allowed 3.92 runs per game, which, surprisingly is much better than the league average of 4.59 and fourth-best in the AL (if I did earned run average, we’d be third-best in the AL). Hot Hyun Jin Ryu: 3 starts, 1-1, 1.89 ERA. In 19 innings, batters hit .211/.233/.338 with 2 home runs, 2 walks, and 19 strikeouts. He’s just been terrific. Steven Matz: 2 starts, 2-0, 1.46 ERA. In 12.1 innings, batters hit .167/.255/.286 with 1 home run, 3 walks, and 13 strikeouts. I have a hard time believing he can be this good but don’t question it, just enjoy.

Jays score 15, beat the Angels

Jays score 15, beat the Angels Share this story The bats came back. So I’d love to be able to explain the Jays 7 run second inning. Let’s just run through it: Santiago Espinal lined a single to right to start the inning. I have a hard time seeing how he doesn’t stay with the team. He made a great bare-handed play in the top of the inning too. Jonathan Davis walked. Not an easy thing to do because the umpire’s strike zone seemed to be five feet wide. The long play. Danny Jansen ground one to Albert Pujols at first. Pujols threw to second and Jose Iglasias threw wide of first, allowing Espinal to score and Jansen to go to second.
