Former Kelvinside Academy pupil Maliha Shoaib wins competition designed to bring more diverse perspectives into journalism beating hundreds on entries from across the UK to land hotly contested Vogue Business internship. It was her dream to become a writer and see her name in print and now Glasgow student Maliha Shoaib has been given a chance to break into an industry while pushing boundaries. The 20-year-old, who attended Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow’s West End, left her mark on judges with her entry for the inaugural Vogue Business Talent Competition. Following her article in which she asked why luxury beauty brands are slow to make inclusive products, judges thought she was an exciting young talent and her story will be published by Vogue Business. She was named as winner of the competition which was created to give people from underrepresented backgrounds a break in the industry.

McBroom, Markkanen meet with Houghton County board | News, Sports, Jobs

gneese@mininggazette.com HOUGHTON The Copper Country’s state legislators met with the Houghton County Board Friday morning to discuss COVID-19 restrictions and other issues in the county at a special meeting Friday. The meeting was the idea of State Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Vulcan, who answered questions from the board along with Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock. McBroom had intended to meet with counties after taking office in 2019, he said, but had been delayed first by legislative work surrounding mental health, then by COVID-19. McBroom said he hopes to hold the meetings quarterly. COVID-19 had scrambled the dynamics in the legislature even beyond the partisan divide, McBroom said.

Kelvinside Academy to take part in Doddie Weir inspired challenge to raise funds for MND research

Ellie Rowand (17), pupil at Kelvinside Academy, and Kelly Brown, who won 64 caps for Scotland. Pupils at Kelvinside Academy are to take part in a challenge which will see them log miles at learn-from-home PE classes to support Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research. Inspired by rugby legend Doddie Weir, the Glasgow school will take part in The Doddie Gump which calls on participants to log exercise miles to raise money for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
