Progressive activist Kina Collins announced Tuesday that she is challenging Rep. Danny Davis in the 2022 Democratic primary for Illinois’ 7th Congressional District.
Collins, 30, a longtime gun violence prevention and “Medicare for All” advocate from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, has the backing of Women’s March of Illinois and the left-wing group Justice Democrats. She is the third primary challenger that Justice Democrats is supporting this election cycle.
“The 7th Congressional District is the most diverse district in Illinois, yet we have some of the greatest disparities in the country,” Collins told HuffPost. “The residents in our district deserve a fighter. We deserve livable wages, school zones and neighborhoods free of gun violence and full access to quality health care.”

“I’m excited and humbled to announce that I am running to represent the people of IL-7 in Congress,” Kina Collins, a gun violence prevention activist, said, later adding: “This is a watershed moment for our district and for our country, and I believe this urgent moment calls for urgent leadership.”
Davis has represented Illinois’s deep-blue 7th congressional district since 1997. But progressives have put him on their target list in recent years as insurgent candidates have unseated other veteran lawmakers across the country.

Collins previously challenged Davis in the 2020 primary, finishing in a distant second place. But with Justice Democrats backing her latest campaign, Collins is hoping to consolidate the support of her party’s progressive wing to take out Davis.

Democratic congresswoman Marie Newman (Ill.) promised a six-figure, taxpayer-funded job to a local activist that he says was a bribe to keep him out of a tight primary race an apparent violation of federal law.
