Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Alaska once again lost population in 2020.
State Demographer David Howell said the state s population was down one-half percent from July 2019 to July 2020. That decline accounts for 3,831 people. It s the fourth straight year of declines
The state s population as of July 2020 stood at 728,903, down from the peak of 740,637 in July of 2016.
Howell attributed the decline in large part to net migration with 8,873 people leaving the state.
Alaska s under 18 and 18 to 64 old population each declined one percent and the 65 and older group grew four percent.
Anchorage lost 3,527 people topping that list. Fairbanks gained the most with an increase of 1,064.
