Waka Kotahi is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel in Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Peninsula and is urging Waikato motorists to remain alert.
Wind has also brought trees down on State highway 6 north of Murchison.
MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan says about 80 millimetres of rain has fallen in the ranges west of the Takaka Hill.
He says it is a lot of water to fall in a short period of and could make lift river levels.

Severe weather is affecting many parts of the country
today (Monday), then MetService is forecasting an easing
trend as the week goes on.
An active front with strong
northeasterlies is crossing Aotearoa today, and MetService
has Severe Weather Watches and Warnings in place for many
regions across both islands.
Several stations in the
northwestern ranges of the Tasman District have recorded
150mm of rain in the 18 hours leading up to 10am this
morning, with an additional 90-110mm still expected until
6am tomorrow.

The South Island is being battered by heavy rain and strong winds as forecasters warn areas that are already waterlogged are in the firing line again.
Rocks Rd (SH6) near Nelson is closed after flooding caused by heavy waves - it is the coastal road between Tahunanui and the port.
An NZTA spokesperson said the road is closed between Bisley Ave and Russell St. Motorists should detour via Whakatu Rd and Waimea Rd.

Gales could gust up to 130 kilometres an hour in exposed places.
MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan says northeasterly winds have already picked up in Fiordland.
He says those winds are also expected to pick up, especially over places like the Canterbury High Country and central parts of the North Island, as well as Auckland tomorrow morning.
MetService has also issued a heavy rain warning for Nelson, northwest of Motueka, and Westland, south of Otira.

Westport is still in a state of emergency after severe flooding on July 17 and 18. A further 100mm is now expected by the coast. “They’ve seen the impacts of heavy rain recently – those areas that were saturated can see heavy rain again,” Corrigan said. The heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible, and driving conditions may be hazardous. The bad weather is also set to put a dampener to the end of the school holidays, and could add chaos to the Monday morning commute.
