Canada still has a lot of work to do before it can exceed its targets to reduce emissions by 40 to 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised in April, said Canada’s budget watchdog on Wednesday.
The report from the parliamentary budget officer (PBO) says increasing the carbon price to $170 per tonne of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, and tightening the rules for Canada’s largest industrial emitters, would reduce GHGs by nearly 100 megatonnes from 674 to 578 megatonnes by 2030.
Additional “non-price”-related measures that have already been announced such as retrofitting buildings, planting trees, and changing how land is used should be good enough to reduce emissions to 468 megatonnes, which is below the target in the Paris Agreement of 511 megatonnes of GHG emissions by 2030.
