An oncologist has been ousted from his hospital over allegations that he s been harming patients for years, though he s garnered support from thousands of his patients and others opposed to his firing.
Thomas Weiner, MD, was reportedly dismissed from St. Peter s Health in Helena, Montana, late last year for reasons that only became apparent in recent legal filings, and are now in dispute. These include a charge that he treated a patient for lung cancer for 11 years, but the person was found not to have the disease at the time of death, according to a Jan. 5 filing by the hospital.

According to court documents filed by St. Peter s Health, an oncologist who was dismissed from the hospital last year incorrectly treated a patient for lung cancer for 11 years before it was determined that the person did not have the disease at the time of death.Â
The hospitalâs legal counsel also said that it learned of âalarming narcotic prescribing practicesâ by Dr. Thomas Weiner, who is contesting his dismissal in court. They said several patients came to the facility s Cancer Treatment Center for narcotics prescriptions on the first day of his absence, but there was no documentation that he had ever prescribed these narcotics, âmuch less a treatment plan to justify the medications.â

An oncologist has sued St. Peterâs Health, its chief executive officer and several of its physicians for damages following his dismissal from the hospital, saying suspending his clinical privileges violated due process, was done without good cause and damaged his reputation.
Dr. Thomas Weiner filed his 26-page lawsuit Thursday in Montana s 1st Judicial Court in Lewis and Clark County, requesting the case be heard by a jury and seeking damages to be determined at the trial.
St. Peterâs Health officials said Friday they are reviewing the lawsuit. St. Peterâs denies any allegations of wrongdoing, they said. We have grave concerns regarding Dr. Weinerâs care and we are confident in the actions we took to protect our patients and the community. This matter is now in the hands of the judicial system.
