A layer of bureaucratic complexity was added to efforts by a local heritage group that is working to keep Locomotive No. 17 in the City of Cornwall.
During 2021 budget deliberations, a majority of council voted in favour of gifting the locomotive to the Eastern Ontario Railway Museum in Smiths Falls as well as paying the $50,000 to move it there, using the $100,000 set aside in 2017 for its restoration. In February however, the group appealed to council to reverse its decision. According to group representative Wes Libbey who penned a letter to council the Benson Centre would be the perfect location for the engine.

Four additional Royal Canadian Legion branches in SDG will be receiving financial support from the federal government to cope with pandemic-related expenses and revenue shortfalls.
Stormont Dundas South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan released the information on Monday afternoon, indicating legion branches in Morrisburg, Iroquois, Winchester, and Finch will each receive $10,845 through the Veterans Organizations Emergency Support Fund.

The City of Cornwall’s strategic plan mission statement has an extra word after a council decision Monday.
Most of council agreed to support a resolution from Coun. Elaine MacDonald that would see the addition of socially within the statement. Previously, the statement read; “To provide services that enable a financially and environmentally sustainable community which will care and provide for the needs and values of its residents.”

“I think that if something is not written down, then it’s easier somehow easier to minimize it in the future,” said MacDonald. “To make sure that we always use those three reference points financially, environmentally, and socially when we are developing policies just makes good sense. To me, this is essential. I think this is time that we put the word in.”
