Gambling addiction eyed in rash of bank robberies, including one in Mansfield

MANSFIELD — Police say the suspect in three area bank robberies may have committed the crimes to fund a gambling addiction. The wife of suspect Roger A. Viveiros, 55, of Taunton, told a detective that her husband told her about three or four months ago that “he needed help for his gambling problem,” according to a police report obtained by The Sun Chronicle Tuesday. Viveiros was arrested last Friday in Taunton, allegedly with a robbery note in his pocket, as he was walking to the same Santander Bank he is accusing of robbing on Nov. 27. The note demanded money with no dye packs and stated no one would get hurt and to give the note back, according to a police report.

Man, 55, arrested for bank robberies in Taunton and Raynham

Roger Viveiros Taunton Police Department A 55-year-old man who allegedly robbed two banks in Taunton and Raynham in the past month was arrested Saturday as he was about to attempt a third robbery, authorities allege. Roger A. Viveiros was taken into custody outside Santander Bank, at 188 Broadway in Taunton, according to a joint press release from Taunton and Raynham police. Around 10 a.m. Saturday, Taunton authorities received a call from a resident who reported he recognized a blue 2003 Toyota Camry that had parked outside his house as the one used by the suspect in the robbery of the bank on Nov. 27, officials said. The resident also recognized the driver and said he was the same man later identified as Viveiros, of Taunton who robbed the bank last month and wearing the same clothes.

Suspect in Mansfield bank robbery, charged with holdups in Taunton, Raynham

MANSFIELD — A Taunton man arrested over the weekend for allegedly robbing two banks in his city and one in Raynham is also a suspect in last week’s holdup of a Citizens Banks branch at Stop & Shop, police say. The suspect, Roger A. Viveiros, 55, was arrested outside a Taunton bank with a note demanding money, police said. He was ordered held without bail Monday after arraignment in Taunton District Court and is scheduled for a dangerousness hearing Wednesday, according to the clerk’s office. The Citizens Bank robbery occurred last Wednesday afternoon and Mansfield Police Chief Ron Sellon confirmed Monday that Viveiros is a suspect.
