According to Aat Pisanwanich, director of the Center for International Trade Studies at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the impact would amount to more than 1.5-2 billion baht a month if tight security inspections continue.

Joe Biden threatened new sanctions on Myanmar, also known as Burma, Monday after its military staged a coup and arrested the country’s civilian leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.  Hours after the detainment of Suu Kyi and her top lieutenants, a military television network announced a one-year state of emergency with ultimate authority transferred to the army chief, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing. Biden blasted the country’s army, calling it a “direct assault on the country’s transition to democracy and rule of law.”  “The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy,” Biden said in a statement. “The reversal of that progress will necessitate an immediate review of our sanction laws and authorities, followed by appropriate action. The United States will stand up for democracy wherever it is under attack.”

In a statement released on the “Chair NLD” (National League for Democracy) Facebook page hours after she and others were detained by the armed forces, she said the military’s action completely disregarded the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was an attempt to reimpose dictatorship upon the country.
