She later married Arthur Murphy, an Anglican priest. They had 4 children together. Emily was introduced to the politics due to her family being on the more “well-off” side compared to other families. Emily learned in a private school, which helped her see the liberal view in life. It opened the doors to the political world. Emily accomplished many things during her lifetime. Emily Murphy was the first female magistrate (a local official who has some of the powers of a judge) of Canada in 1916 and helped abolish discriminatory legislation against women. She was also the first woman elected into the Edmonton Hospital Board in 1910. By 1916, she was able to give women 33% legal rights to their spouse’s property under the Dower Act after campaigning for a few years. It gave
