Virginia baseball players Nic Kent and Zach Messinger were selected on the final day of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.
Kent was the taken in the 11th round (320th overall) by the Colorado Rockies while Messinger went to the New York Yankees in the 13th round (393rd overall).
Kent, a three-year starter in the middle infield, played in 130-straight games to close out his UVA career. He started all 63 at shortstop in 2021 and led the team with 45 RBI. The final day of this year’s MLB Draft is in the books for the Houston Astros, highlighted by four pitchers and a pair of shortstops.
11th Round (328th Overall) Chad Stevens, SS, University of Portland
The first pick from the final day for the Houston Astros was a shortstop from the west coast. Stevens had a great season with the University of Portland, batting .333 and blasting eight home runs. He also was efficient defensively with a .933 fielding percentage.
12th Round (358th Overall) Rhett Kouba, RHP, Dallas Baptist University
Kouba is coming off of a big 2021 season, going 6-2 with a 2.77 ERA. He was limited to start the season, but eventually was able to put together some quality starts, including hurling seven shutout innings over Southern Illinois.
Dominic Hamel played baseball at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, lettering twice. The right-hander had a solid build for a pitcher and a promising fastball and breaking ball but went undrafted as a senior. He attended Yavapai College, a community college in Prescott, Arizona after graduating high school, posting a 2.67 ERA in 67.1 innings in his freshman year and a 3.68 ERA in 73.1 innings in his sophomore year. His peripheral numbers in 2018 were excellent, with 29 walks and 79 strikeouts, but he regressed a bit in 2019, walking 44 and striking out 84. His 2019 sophomore season would end up being his last at Yavapai, as he transferred to Dallas Baptist University for the 2020 season, his junior year.
