Champagne Society Summer Ball cancelled for the second time

The Champagne Summer Ball run by Durham University Champagne Society has been cancelled for the second year running due to police concerns, the society has said. In a statement on its Facebook page, the Champagne Society stated: “Apparently absent of any real crime to tackle, the police have again decided to focus their efforts on us instead. As a result, the ball in its current form is simply no longer viable.” The society was investigated “on the basis of the potentially life-threatening combination of excessive alcohol and students entering the water at Hardwick Hall.” The Students’ Union stated that “the risk assessment put in place had not been delivered on the night.”

Durham MP re-establishes Friends of Durham University parliamentary group

Durham City MP, Mary Foy, has re-established the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), Friends of Durham University. The group, which was first established by Foy’s predecessor, Roberta Blackman-Wood, is chaired by Mary Foy, and Richard Holden, MP for North-West Durham, Kevan Jones, MP for North Durham, Paul Howell, MP for Sedgefield, and Graham Brady, MP for Altrincham and Sale West, will serve as Vice-Chairs.  Peter Gibson, MP for Darlington, will serve as secretary, while Kate Osborne, MP for Jarrow, will be an officer of the group, with Durham University acting as the secretariat. “By re-establishing the APPG, we will be able to increase academia’s role in policy-making and to promote the work of Durham University at a national level.”
