Durham Community Groups to Host Town Hall on Dismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline
Two Durham community groups will host a virtual town hall this week to discuss strategies to eliminate public school policies and practices that take Black and Brown students out of their classrooms and push them into jail cells.
The topic, âDismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline,â will be the centerpiece of a discussion Wednesday moderated by members of the Youth Justice Project and the People s Alliance.
The town hall hosts define the school-to-prison pipeline as a âsystem of policies and practices that push students, especially students of color, out of school and into the juvenile and adult criminal systems.âÂ

New Youth-Led Campaign Wants Cops Out of Durham Schools
Aissa Dearing
At the heart of the effort is the activistsâ call for the removal of sheriffâs deputies who work as school resource officers (or SROs), at Durhamâs 17 public schools. The new #LiberateToEducate campaign is the latest phase of youth-fueled activism calling for cops off campuses. It kicks off with a virtual town hall at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
The initiative is being organized by the student-led Youth Justice Project of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice.
The youth activists describe their campaign as a âcoordinated effort to end the school-to-prison pipeline and achieve educational justice in Durham Public School (DPS) System,â according to a press release. âThis campaign envisions a future in which students of color attend schools that lift them, not pat them down and where governmental initiatives invest in their future, not their incarceration.â

The board voted unanimously to remain in Plan C, as it has since the school year began. The vote took place Thursday during a special called board meeting. You can kind of see some of the solemnness on our faces, Board Chairwoman Bettina Umstead said after the vote, addressing people who might watch the livestream of the meeting.
