How the ADL's Israel Advocacy Undermines Its Civil Rights Work

How the ADL’s Israel Advocacy Undermines Its Civil Rights Work This report will appear in our Spring 2021 issue. Subscribe now to get a copy in your mailbox. IN THE SUMMER OF 2016, a handful of senior Anti-Defamation League (ADL) staff members and executives in New York and Washington, DC joined a conference call to discuss a sensitive topic: the organization’s position on what would come to be known as the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act. The bill would amend federal civil rights law to employ a controversial definition of antisemitism, which included “delegitimiz[ing]” Israel, blaming Israel for “all . . . political tensions,” and, in the case of international organizations, “focusing on Israel only for peace or human rights investigations.” Those guilty of antisemitism under this definition could be investigated by the Department of Education for violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Durham may give formerly incarcerated residents $500 per month in guaranteed income Charlie Innis, The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) Feb. 4 DURHAM At least 55 formerly incarcerated Durham residents could get $500 a month for a year as part of a guaranteed income pilot program, City Council member Mark-Anthony Middleton said Thursday. Last month Mayor Steve Schewel announced that Durham will likely get a share of a $15 million grant that Twitter s chief executive officer, Jack Dorsey, had contributed to Mayors for Guaranteed Income, a group advocating for such programs across the country. The city passed a resolution Thursday to pledge its support for a program at the local and national levels.

Here are 3 ways Durham County plans to promote racial equity

Here are 3 ways Durham County plans to promote racial equity Charlie Innis, The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) Feb. 2 DURHAM Durham County leaders agreed Monday to take three actions to advance racial equity in Durham. One will address accusations of racism from within. County Chair Brenda Howerton announced plans for racial equity training for the five-member Board of County Commissioners and county manager. A new commission to tackle systemic racism and the designation of Juneteenth as a county holiday were two more initiatives the board agreed on at the meeting. Racial equity training Howerton called the present moment an opportunity for commissioners to lean into their collective discomfort and make our intention, commitment, role and responsibility in addressing racism clear.
