Cities across the nation are following a corporate trend to hire diversity and inclusion officers to harness the benefits of a diverse workforce.
With 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies employing diversity and inclusion officers in 2012, major cities like New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Antonio and now some of Oklahomaâs largest cities have followed their lead.
Cinthya Allenâs first order of business as Normanâs first-ever diversity and equity officer is to establish partnerships and build collaboration among community groups as she develops the departmentâs goals.

The City of Norman is proud to announce and welcome Cinthya Allen as the City’s first Chief Diversity and Equity Officer. Allen will be responsible for advising the City on affirmative actions and creating and implementing programs designed to ensure fair and equitable opportunities for citizens, staff and council as she shapes the newly created role.
“We are thrilled to welcome Cinthya to the Norman team. We were hopeful we would find someone qualified to help us develop a brand new function of city government from scratch and she comes to us with an extensive resume. We are eager to have her expertise as we continue to grow our diversity and inclusion efforts,” said City Manager Darrel Pyle.

Norman businesses in need of financial assistance are inching closer to thousands of dollars in grants as city staff prepare to score applications and begin cutting checks in the next few weeks, according to City Manager Darrel Pyle.
The City of Normanâs small business and non-profit organization grant program drew an overwhelming 628 applicants, a city report shows.
The City Council appropriated $1 million of approximately $3 million in Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act funds to the program. Applications were available for up to $10,000 in grants to businesses and non-profit organizations from Dec. 3 to Dec. 28.
Mayor Breea Clark said she was pleased to see the program move forward.
