Glen McAuley’s stunning last-second strike wasn’t enough for Athlone Town as they were edged out in a penalty shoot-out by Waterford following a drama-packed FAI Cup first round tie.
The striker sealed his hat-trick with a spectacular strike directly from the kick-off to force penalty kicks as the First Division side came up just short in Lissywollen.

Waterford FC have progressed to the second round of the FAI Centenary Senior Cup after a most crazy contest with Athlone Town ended in a 4-4 draw after extra-time with Blues keeper Paul Martin the hero saving twice in the shootout as his side won 4-2 on spot kicks.
Anthony Wordsworth gave Waterford the lead on 40 minutes when he latched onto a loose clearance from Garry Comerford to drill the ball past Kayleum Rice before it got better for the Blues seven minutes into the second-half when Shane Griffin rifled an angled left-footed shot past Rice after good work from Quitirna.
