Jason Marcum - Sea of Blue
John Schlarman was named the Herald Leader’s 2020 Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year, a much-deserved honor.
Schlarman received 76 first-place votes from a total of 163 votes cast, and was ahead of second-place finisher Rhyne Howard by a significant margin.
Schlarman was an influential figure in the state last year as he battled cancer and sadly passed away from the disease last fall. However, his courage and strength in continuing to show up for games and practices even while going through chemotherapy treatments that took an extensive toll on his body.
Grayson County native Landon Young; three other Wildcats named All-SEC December 22, 2020
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Four University of Kentucky football players earned a spot on the Coaches All-Southeastern Conference teams announced Tuesday by the league office. Senior offensive tackle Landon Young was named to the first team, while senior center Drake Jackson and junior offensive tackle Darian Kinnard were named to the second team. Redshirt freshman linebacker J.J. Weaver was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team.
Young, of Lexington, Kentucky, has appeared in 47 career games, with 31 starts, including 23 in a row at left tackle. He was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week twice this season (Oct. 19 and Nov. 16) and after 10 games, graded at 89 percent, did not miss an assignment, and led the “Big Blue Wall” in knockdown blocks with 56. He totaled 163 blocks at the point of attack. Young has deep family ties throughout the Caneyville area of Grayson County.
Stoops revealed that Kentucky has submitted paperwork for five juniors to the draft advisory board. He did not say who the players are, but the most important is right tackle Darian Kinnard, who could be a Day 2/3 pick if he enters the draft.
Stoops did say that Kinnard has not made up his mind on if he’ll leave for the pros or return for a senior season. One could surmise the feedback Kinnard gets from the advisory board will play a big part in his final decision.
Other notable juniors who could consider going to the NFL include running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., defensive end Joshua Paschal, linebacker Deandre Square, defensive tackle Marquan McCall, safety Yusuf Corker and linebacker Jamin Davis. Getting most, if not all of these guys back would be massive for the 2021 Cats.
