Wishcasting Legal Drama Good Fight Implicates Trump Officials, Congressmen in Jan 6 Riot

This season of the liberal legal drama The Good Fight (now on Paramount+) started out slow, more so than previous seasons, mostly because the prime target, Donald Trump, is out of office. But, in the July 8 episode titled “And the Court Had a Clerk”, the drama took a turn and the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol became a storyline. Kurt McVeigh (Gary Cole), a top official at the Veteran’s Administration (appointed by Trump), is married to Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), a name partner in a Chicago law firm. Kurt is conservative and Diane is a liberal feminist. Kurt’s office undergoes some changes due to the Biden administration coming into power. In the meantime, Kurt sees a 10 Most Wanted by the FBI flyer of people who are suspected of taking part in the January 6 riot posted on a bulletin board in a hallway at the V.A. Kurt thinks he might recognize one of the men.

New faces, new battles: The Good Fight is still worth fighting

From the very start of The Good Fight the series has been defined by America’s changed relationship with Trump. The series explored how the former President impacted on democratic norms and how concerns about Trump (real and otherwise) resulted in a dramatic cultural shift across the US. With the Trump years behind the show (if you need a catch-up on where things ended, head here) the series hasn’t lost any of its savage bite. So-called Trumpism remains, with the impact of Trump politics still reverberating. But the show will continue to look at racial imbalances, police misconduct (already a strong focus in early episodes, but this will be heightened now following the murder of George Floyd and last year’s riots), and a badly disrupted justice system.
