CROWN POINT â A man convicted of torturing and killing his 13-year-old son a decade ago is now claiming he was wronged by his attorneys.
Riley L. Choate, 48, formerly of Hammond, claims he was tricked into pleading guilty to being a habitual offender.
âI only wanted to plead guilty to the (other child neglect) charges. I didnât know I was pleading guilty to the habitual. I donât think you should hold that against me, Choate recently said during a court hearing seek post-conviction relief. âI was strung along. I needed a good lawyer.
He spoke Friday before Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan during the hearing.

CROWN POINT â A Lake Criminal Court judge this week granted bail for a man charged with murder in a fatal shooting at a Hammond tire shop last year after an alleged road rage confrontation.
Attorneys for Ricky A. Scott III, 23, of Hammond, wrote in court filings he more likely than not properly acted in self-defense during a shootout May 5 that killed Uriel Arambula, 25, and wounded Arambula s brother, Scott, and Scott s co-defendant, Orlando Berrios, 24, of Hammond.
The shootout capped off a series of events that began with a crash on Cline Avenue involving Berrios and the Arambulas male friend, who was driving a maroon or red pickup truck.
CROWN POINT â A Gary man was convicted Thursday of several counts and acquitted of others in connection with a shooting in Gary in 2019 described by prosecutors as a family s nightmare of violence.
William D. Galloway Jr., 28, of Gary, stood trial this week on allegations he shot a woman four times, attempted to rob and shoot her son Sean Baker, and fired a gun through a window at a pregnant woman and her then-6-year-old child Sept. 18, 2019, at a home in the 2500 block of Pierce Street.
Jurors deliberated about three hours before convicting Galloway of one count of attempted murder for shooting at Baker, one count of aggravated battery for shooting and wounding Baker s relative, and three counts of criminal recklessness.
