The Washington County commissioners unanimously passed their 2021 budget with no tax increase, but the board is divided on next yearâs spending plan and the creation of a human services department.
The commissioners kept property taxes steady at 2.43 mills next year as they approved the $104 million budget during a brief special meeting Monday morning that was streamed live over the internet.
Commissioner Larry Maggi reluctantly voted yes on the budget and took exception with using nearly $10 million from the countyâs fund balance to balance the spending plan and another $10 million to purchase the Crossroads Center building where the county offices will eventually be located. Maggi, the lone Democrat on the board, also disagreed with spending $1.5 million in the 2021 budget to form a human services department that he said is expected to cost $2.5 million annually.
Officials at the Greater Washington County Food Bank are defending their decision to cut the number of local food pantries in operation, but said the loss of $280,000 from the county commissioners will be another hurdle to overcome during the pandemic.
âDuring a year where Greater Washington County Food Bank has reached unprecedented levels of food distribution around the communities of Washington County, the food bank now has another set of obstacles to overcome,â according to a statement from the food bank. âIn its 35-year history, Greater Washington County Food Bank has faced its fair share of times where food insecurity has risen, but nothing quite like COVID-19.â
For the first time in nearly a quarter century, the Washington County Prison Board, at the behest of the new warden, voted unanimously to increase jail inmateâs pay to $3 a day from $1.50.
The previous pay raise was instituted in 1996, according to Commission Chairman Diana Irey Vaughan, who is also in charge of the prison board.
Warden Jeffrey Fewell, who left a similar position in Kansas after being hired as the top administrator of the Washington County jail last month, also received permission to install a key system with GPS capabilities to track the devices, which record when doors are locked and unlocked and by whom.
