Virtual events across Ireland to celebrate Africa Day 2021   Africa Day (25 May) will be celebrated online this year, with virtual events taking place across the country. Twenty-three local authorities and their community partners are hosting a diverse range of virtual activities, from storytelling to traditional crafts, musical performances to webinars. Members of the African diaspora in Ireland and the communities of African heritage are also invited to share their own Africa Day content by tagging @AfricaDayIreland on Facebook, @AfricaDay on Twitter or AfricaDayIreland on Instagram, and use the hashtags #AfricaDayIreland and #AfricaDay2021. 2021 is the 16th year in which Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs is supporting events to mark Africa Day in Ireland.

St Helen s residents hopeful council will acquire block By Mike Gilmore Residents at St Helen s court in Dun Laoghaire continued their protest against their eviction today.  They re trying to stop a vulture fund from selling their homes out from under them.  Tony Geraghty is one of the residents at St Helen s court, he s been fighting efforts from Mill Street Projects to evict him for years.  He s one of seven tenants who are hopeful that the local authority will step in and acquire the block.  Having lost his caring job recently, Tony is afraid he ll end up homeless.  The money I get on jobseekers allowance, I cannot top up the HAP allowance to afford a place as little as €1,100 or even €1,000.

Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue \ Philip Doyle In his column in last week’s issue, Michael Slavin wrote of two objections which had been lodged with South Dublin County Council against Horse Sport Ireland’s (HSI) planning permission for its development of a Centre of Excellence at Greenogue. One was from Chris Byrne of CoilÓg Equestrian and the second was also from Chris Byrne on behalf of the Equestrian Competition Venue Owners Alliance (ECVOA). In the Dáil last Wednesday, Kildare North TD Catherine Murphy (Social Democrats) questioned Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue about his plans to conduct an assessment of the appropriateness of the Greenogue site that HSI plans to relocate to; and the engagements he has had with HSI regarding the proposed move to this location.
