A campaigner for abuse survivors has said delaying jury trials due to Covid restrictions will be “catastrophic” for victims of sexual abuse and rape.
Measures taken to tackle the spread of Covid-19 in the Central Criminal Court, which deals with cases of murder, rape, and serious sexual offences, have meant that jury trials are on hold.
In one case before the court a defendant who has been charged with attempted murder will now not stand trial for over two years because of a court backlog.
Shaneda Daly, who lives in Co Kildare, set up a support group for victims of sexual assault and abuse called Survivors Side By Side four years ago.

Irish comedian Ruth Hunter started standup in 2015. She immediately noticed âeveryday sexismâ â male comperes introducing performers by commenting on their breasts, all-male lineups â but was unsure how to challenge it.
Over the summer of 2020, now in Glasgow, Hunter followed the news as sexual harassment allegations against men in Irish and UK comedy were shared online. âSomeone who I thought was grand turned out to be a major creep and it unlocked something,â Hunter says. âYou might be threatening your own career by talking about this stuff, but I donât care. The stakes are too high.â
Lough Ree Access for All project humbled to be among National Lottery Good Causes Awards finalists

Lough Ree Access for All in Lanesboro and Ballyleague is among the thirty-six community groups, sports clubs and organisations from all over Ireland who have been announced as finalists in the National Lottery Good Causes Awards.
Volunteers with the boat service for people with disabilities said they are ‘humbled to be selected’ among the six finalists in the ‘Health & Wellbeing’ category.
The Lough Ree Access For All boat provides an adapted, integrated water based experience for people with disabilities for the very first time, allowing access for up to 8 wheelchair users at the same time.

Autism Support Louth & Meath will contest in the Youth category in the Good Causes Awards final.
The Awards honour the inspiring work and achievements of thousands of projects, clubs and individuals from all over Ireland who, with the help of National Lottery Good Causes funding, have had an extraordinary impact on their local communities. Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes all over the country.
