Bosses have dedicated it to the memory of late chairman Duncan Skinner, who passed away earlier this month. Mr Skinner, along with businessesman Bob Keiller, led the fight to save Glencraft in 2010 - and it was his idea to enter the award.

A total of 205 businesses around the UK have been recognised for their exceptional achievements in promoting opportunity, innovation, sustainable development and international trade. For luxury mattress-maker Glencraft, its award for promoting opportunity through social mobility is a fitting tribute to former chairman Duncan Skinner, who died earlier this month following a year-long battle with cancer. It was his idea to enter Glencraft for the Queen’s Awards and he was told of its successful bid just days before his death.

More than £7,500 has been raised by the firm after their relay passed a virtual baton all the way from Inverness to Glasgow. More than 60 walkers took part in the effort, which was dedicated to Duncan Skinner who died three weeks ago. He also raised funds for Glenelg Mountain Rescue Team, a cause and place close to Mr Skinner’s heart.

Sign Up The worlds of north-east business, charity and sport are mourning the death of “one of life’s genuinely good guys” Duncan Skinner, who has died aged 63. Mr Skinner, who was chairman of the Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust (AFCCT) bravely fought cancer over the past year, and died on Thursday. The Moffat-born chartered management accountant was one of the north-east’s most respected business figures, both for his 35-year career in the oil and gas industry, and for his role in helping to save one of Aberdeen’s longest-established charities.
