Correspondent The weather was hot and dry and the Lake Monticello golf course was in excellent condition for the prestigious Faulconer Invitational golf tournament played on May 22 and 23. A total of 88 golfers competed in three divisions. The regular Championship Division saw golfers compete on both days from the blue tees, also known as “the tips.” The Lake course is 6,930 yards long from these tees and that is comparable to some of the PGA courses played by the Phil Mickelson’s of the world. There was also a Seniors Division for golfers 50 and over and a Super Seniors Division for those 65 and over. The Seniors played from the regular men’s white tees over a distance of 6,296 yards, while the Super Seniors played from the Gold tees over a distance of 5,950 yards. The Faulconer champion is, of course, the winner in the championship men’s division.

Alice Zou a high school junior from Potomac, MD brought the Lake Monticello course to its knees on Sunday March 2, when she carded a three under par 69. This very impressive score gave Zou a two-day total of 146, which was good enough for a two stroke win in the Annual Commonwealth Classic, which was played over the Lake Monticello course for the third year in a row.
The Peggy Kirk Bell (PKB) tour is named after a former prominent Ladies Professional Golfers Association (LPGA) touring pro. The tour now holds multiple tournaments all over the country for aspiring young female golfers. The Commonwealth Classic has been held in central Virginia for a number of years. It previously was played at Birdwood Golf course, home of the University of Virginia golf team. The PKB officials moved the tournament to Lake Monticello three years ago when the Birdwood course was being overhauled. Fluvanna County High Swim Coach Jason Davis reports that the Fluco boys’ and girl’s swim teams both turned in strong performances at the Class 3 State swim meet and at Region swim meet. The girl’s team had only two competitors at the State meet, but they turned in strong performances. Lauren Davis was runner-up in diving with an overall score of 357.85, which Coach Davis said is a new school record. Abby Fuller competed in two events at the State meet and set new school records in both events. In what Davis described as “the race of the day”, Fuller finished second, a mere .03 seconds behind the winner. Her time was 23.27. Fuller was 3
