The University of Kansas will implement all of the recommendations of the Task Force of Community-Responsive Public Safetyâs report, Chancellor Douglas Girod announced Monday.
The task force recommended improving KUâs response to behavioral health emergencies by shifting responsibility for such calls from KUâs public safety office to mental health professionals and integrating KU services with already existing initiatives by Douglas Countyâs government.
Girod expressed support for this recommendation, citing existing efforts by the City of Lawrence and Douglas County to create a coordinated community response to mental health crises. Until that response is in place, KUâs public safety office will continue to train officers in crisis intervention and trauma-informed responses to respond to mental health crises. The announcement did not include a timeline of when the coordinated community response might be implemented.

LAWRENCE, Kan. â Hundreds of University of Kansas graduates who had their graduation canceled Sunday because of severe weather will have another chance to attend commencement ceremonies.
Chancellor Douglas Girod announced Monday that graduation ceremonies for the class of 2021 will be held Sunday, May 23, at Memorial Stadium. Further details will be announced later, he said.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the university called off all three ceremonies on Sunday for the class of 2021 amid worries about lightning.
Class of 2021 KU graduates still made the most of the day. Students and their families congregated on the Hill for photos, and graduates took turns walking through the Campanile.
