INDIANAPOLIS Strange doesn t begin to describe how it feels for Bob Jenkins the man with the unfaltering voice and genius to call what s happening at 200 mph on the track to be at a loss for words.
But brain cancer is brutal and Jenkins has been fighting it for three months. When the longtime legendary radio and TV announcer of the Indianapolis 500 revealed he was battling the disease in February, he quickly let fans know he would be scaling back his duties at this year s race.
Scaling back happened on a much larger scale than he could have predicted. A mainstay at the track, Jenkins has been to Indianapolis Motor Speedway only twice this month. Once for a short visit with IMS president Doug Boles and the other to say a personal thank you to all the drivers who have showered him with prayers and well wishes.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Concerns about the spread of the coronavirus are surrounding the track as race day approaches.
During qualifying Saturday and Sunday, many race fans were maskless as they cheered on their favorite drivers. Video caught over the weekend showed hundreds of people with no face coverings in the grandstands and walking around Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
While mask mandates have been lifted in many Indiana counties and around the country, Marion’s County mandate will stand for at least a couple more weeks for reasons specifically surrounding Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 race. Local health officials and track officials say the mask mandate is holding; however, it doesn’t seem to be enforced off 16th Street.
