From Flight of the Navigator to bank robber: the ruin and redemption of a Disney child star

Joey Cramer, aged 12, in Flight of the Navigator Credit: Alamy In May 2016, headlines surfaced online that rightly shocked film fans of a certain age – former child actor Joey Cramer, star of Flight of the Navigator, had been charged with bank robbery in Canada. Seeing the headlines – accompanied by a gaunt mug shot – it was easy to write off Cramer, then 42 years old, as just another child star gone off the rails and onto the scrapheap. I was guilty of having that exact thought, and hovered over the story for a second longer than usual. For me, like millions of Eighties kids, Flight of the Navigator still packs an imagination-zinging punch. Released in 1986 – in the wake of ET, Back to the Future, and The Goonies – the Disney-produced film has that uniquely Eighties, Spielberg-esque spirit: a kids’ fantasy adventure through time and space, with an all-American family at its heart.

Scientists launch herculean project creating atlas of human genome variants

E-Mail SEATTLE (April 1, 2021) - An international consortium of geneticists, biologists, clinicians, mathematicians, and other scientists is determined to take the study of the human genome to the next level - creating a comprehensive atlas of genetic variants to advance the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. This Herculean undertaking is unprecedented, said Dr. Matthew Hurles, a geneticist at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, England. Indeed, the scientific community has an increasingly comprehensive catalog of functional DNA elements in the human genome, but that catalog remains incomplete. We have collectively characterized the functional impact of less than 1% of genetic variation in the 1 to 2 percent of our DNA.

Muppets a bit cringey, but still cleverly chaotic 40 years later

Winnipeg Free Press By: Alison Gillmor | Posted: 7:00 PM CST Thursday, Mar. 4, 2021 Opinion Last month Disney Plus reissued five seasons of The Muppet Show, which originally ran from 1976 to 1981, airing in Canada on the CBC. A LOT OF IT ACTUALLY FEELS PRETTY FRESH Statler & Waldorf in the Balcony Box. I remember watching it way back then. I had been a Sesame Street kid, and this felt like a glamorous prime-time upgrade, combining multicoloured Muppet creatures with a truly unpredictable array of human guest stars. Alice Cooper one week, Charles Aznavour another. Diana Ross! Doug Henning! Harry Belafonte! Rudolf Nureyev! Debbie Harry! Mark Hamill! Roy Rogers and Dale Evans! Liberace! You never knew who would show up.

GAAC holds exhibit for Larkin

Granite Falls Advocate Tribune The Granite Area Arts Council is a known powerhouse of fostering arts activities, viewings, and discussions in Granite Falls. Running through March 27, the latest exhibit by Renville based Artist Dona Larkin is no less than another spectacular example of the continued gallery offerings no one should miss.      “I was born at the Granite Falls hospital” started Dona with a smile, “where I now have a large painting of the Minnesota river on display. My children were also born in Granite Falls and they are in the painting, feeding the ducks.” Growing up a mile west of Renville in a family of seven children, Dona has done some form of professional art since she was in high school, starting with commissioned works and moving into her full time artistry in the mid-1970’s. “So many people supported my work, but my family was the first to encourage me,” said Larkin, thinking initially of her mother.
