Duncombe Place, near York Minster, where some of the disabled parking bays could be located BLUE Badge holders are being asked for their views on potential new parking spaces on the edge of York city centre - before a temporary ban on parking in footstreets could become permanent. City of York Council says it is reviewing options to provide additional disabled parking locations at the edges of the pedestrianised footstreets area. It says it is doing so before considering whether to make permanent the temporary changes to access arrangements introduced last year, which removed Blue Badge access exemptions on specific streets - to protests from disabled drivers.
Preparations for the reopening of the city centre have been taking place for some time COUNCIL chiefs are seeking to reassure residents ahead of Monday s reopening of the city centre - saying the Covid situation is very different to the position at the end of 2020. York currently has one of the lowest infection rates in the country, more than half the adult population here has had at least one dose of the vaccine and a large number of socially distanced outdoor seating areas are being created to allow people to return to the city safely. There are also plans for a Covid test site to open in the city centre soon, where visitors and staff can get rapid tests.

Prince Philip made many visits to York and North Yorkshire over the years as our picture gallery shows PRINCE Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, made several memorable visits to York and North Yorkshire over his seven decades as the Queen s consort. The first was in 1949, just two years after his wedding to Princess Elizabeth, and three before she became Queen. Our picture shows him – as tradition dictated – walking behind the Princess alongside the civic party through Stonegate with York Minster in the background. His final visit was in April 2012 when he and Princess Beatrice accompanied the Queen on a visit to York as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK. During their time in the city they attended the Maundy Thursday service at York Minster.
