The Michigan House voted Tuesday to pass three bills that will extend state and city income tax deadlines through April 17, codifying extensions that had already been issued by the state and its biggest cities.
In March, the Michigan Department of Treasury extended the state individual income tax deadline from Thursday, April 15, to May 17. Many cities levying income taxes gave similar extensions.
The delay brought the state in line with a similar delay issued by the Internal Revenue Service due to the unusual circumstances related to the pandemic.
The three bills passed nearly unanimously Tuesday through the House. They essentially codify the delays and provided automatic extensions for state and city income tax returns should the IRS decide an additional delay is needed. The bills were sponsored by Rep. Matt Hall, R-Marshall; Rep. Tenisha Yancey, D-Harper Woods; and Rep. Andrew Beeler, R-Port Huron.

Criminal justice reform bills championed by a Monroe politician are moving through the Legislature again after being shut down by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last year.
Rep. Joe Bellino, R-Monroe, is the primary sponsor of House Bills 4219-20. The package of bills would make it so individuals would be able to expunge first-time driving under the influence convictions so long as the incident was isolated.
Repeat offenders would not be eligible for expungement, according to the bills.
“Speaking as an addict in continued revery for more than 30 years, I understand the importance of second chances,” Bellino said.

LANSING, MI - Expungement for first-time drunk driving offenses is one step closer to becoming Michigan law.
The state House approved the two-bill package with wide bipartisan approval during session Wednesday, March 10. The legislation now heads to the Senate for deliberation. If approved there, it would head to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk for potential approval.
Both House Bills 4219 and 4220, sponsored by Reps. Tenisha Yancey, D-Harper Woods, and Joe Bellino, R-Monroe, passed 93-17.
