Former federal health officials argue the United States was not prepared for COVID-19 and political considerations prevented the government from saving lives as outbreaks spread.
U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, led a Wednesday hearing focused on the pandemic response and steps to improve mitigation efforts in the future. In testimony before a Senate panel, former officials with FEMA, the CDC and DHHS said the government failed to take the novel coronavirus seriously early on and wasted valuable time needed to prepare for the worst.

The $1.9 trillion federal stimulus package includes $28.6 billion just for restaurants, but officials expect demand to far outweigh supply, leaving many businesses without a chance at aid.
The grants will be distributed via the Small Business Administration – which hasn’t announced the exact date of when the application period will start. But industry leaders expect it to be in mid-to-late April, and a flood of applications within minutes is likely.
