A state Assembly bill that is meant to prevent the abuses and close legal loopholes exposed in the A3 charter school scandal is facing fierce opposition from charter school leaders.
The bill, AB 1316, is a sweeping reform measure meant to fix weaknesses in state law that allowed executives from the statewide A3 charter school network to pocket more than $50 million of public funds funneled from charter schools.
In February A3 executives Sean McManus of Australia and Jason Schrock of Long Beach pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal public dollars and agreed to cooperate with authorities to recover the stolen money.
California ‘Cancel Culture’ Bills Fail in State Senate
A pair of bills designed to tackle “cancel culture” by designating political affiliation as a protected class have failed to pass the California Senate Judiciary Committee.
Sen. Melissa Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore), who introduced the bills, told The Epoch Times that partisan politics played a role in the committee’s decision, which she said threatened freedom of speech.
“I am extremely disappointed the majority party in the Senate Judiciary Committee could not see past their partisan blinders to protect everyday Californians from becoming victims of discrimination due to their party affiliations and beliefs,” Melendez said in an email.

Nationally, there was an 8% increase in auto fatalities, with a death toll of 42,060 and that was in a pandemic year with significant reductions in traffic .
Thankfully, California legislators have stepped up, introducing bills in both the Senate and Assembly calling for automated speed enforcement. Speed is a factor in roughly one-third of all serious injuries and fatalities, and automated enforcement, now operating in 140 communities in the United States, has helped reduce serious collisions and fatalities where it’s used.
