Illinois residents worry about redistricting transparency as Democrats and GOP spar

Apr. 20 Central and southern Illinoisans told lawmakers Monday they re concerned about transparency and fairness as Democrats aim to redraw legislative and congressional maps in the state.
Democrats invited the public to share their thoughts on redistricting at two dozen hearings statewide, including one Monday evening in East St. Louis.
Stanley Franklin, president of the NAACP s East St. Louis chapter, said he is concerned about racial gerrymandering suppressing Black voters. He asked for a comment period before lawmakers vote on a map so the public could have a chance to weigh in.

Wood River moves council meeting to teleconference

WOOD RIVER Monday’s Wood River City Council meeting will now be held via teleconference instead of in-person.
On Saturday evening, Wood River City Clerk Stacy Ehrman distributed an email stating the city council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 19, would be held via teleconference “due to the Illinois Executive Order 202105 (COVID-19).”
Agenda items for the meeting include:
• Resuming spending on the recreation center project;
• Amending the Fiscal Year 2021/22 Budget to increase the recreation center line item within the 1% Non-Home Rule Sales Tax Fund by $414,103.80 to begin the recreation design; and

EAST ST. LOUIS The Illinois Senate Redistricting Committee Southwestern Illinois Subcommittee is planning a hearing on redistricting at 5 p.m. Monday, April 19, at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in East St. Louis.
The hearing will be hosted by state Sens. Rachelle Crowe, D-Glen Carbon; Doris Turner, D-Springfield; and Christopher Belt, D-Centreville.
The Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus is holding regional hearings to gather public input as lawmakers begin the once-a-decade process of drawing new legislative boundaries. Members of the public may request to provide testimony, submit electronic testimony or submit electronic witness slips via the General Assembly website in advance of the hearing or through email at redistrictingcommittee@senatedem.ilga.gov.
