Wetlands protection Emily Bayer The first time I visited Eagle Marsh was in September 2016. The fields of flowers were breathtaking. It seemed that each step I took prompted hundreds of small frogs to jump across the marshy path. And I had never seen so many monarchs. By the size of the butterflies, I assumed they had recently emerged from their cocoons and were preparing for migration. I try to return each September to the wetlands to experience the abundance of color, movement and sound – life. I lived in New Orleans in 2012 and 2013 – seven years after Hurricane Katrina – and the physical damage from the hurricane was still apparent in many parts of the city. Even more striking were the psychological impacts the disaster had on its survivors, who marked time with “before the storm” and “after the storm.”
