The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was founded in Dublin by James Stephens on this day 1858. After the collapse of the 1848 rebellion, James Stephens and John O’Mahony fled to Europe to avoid being arrested. In 1856, he made returned to Ireland. O’Mahony had moved to America in 1853 and begun the Emmet Monument Association. He contacted Stephens, asking him to start a similar organization in Ireland. Stephens wrote back, explaining his conditions and requirements, which amounted to uncontrolled power and £100 a month for the first three months. It was on March 17, 1858 that Stephens received his letter of acceptance from O’Mahony, and £80.

In a nice turn, the first All-Ireland championship under the new format ended up being won, via the backdoor, by the only county to vote against its adoption at Congress.
What else? The Rossies lit up the championship and then allegedly lit up their rivals jerseys. The Dubs headed off on tour, Hill 16 pitching up on the Killinan side of Thurles in one of the more famous games of the decade.

The drumbeat for the abolition of direct provision reached a crescendo this past Friday, as the Government finally published its long-awaited White Paper on the issue.
The much-maligned system, in which asylum seekers are housed together and kept in a dehumanising legal and social limbo, will be fully dismantled by 2024 , the expert report says.
In the first phase, locations for new reception and integration centres which will be spread throughout the country.
Own-door accommodation will be provided in phase two and the aim will be to integrate asylum seekers into the community. Integration Minister Roderic O Gorman has said that it will take a whole-of-society approach .
