Last hole eagle gives Bundy the VW Scramble

Sport Peter Owen Premium Content Subscriber only An astonishing eagle on the final hole gave Bundaberg Golf Club a narrow victory in the final of the Volkswagen Scramble, held last week at Twin Waters. The team from Yowani Country Club was crowned the women’s champions in what was actually the 2019/20 final, postponed from late last year because of COVID-19. A final round of nett 56.9 gave Bundaberg a 163.7 total across the tournament to steal the win from RACV Club Healesville by just 0.4 shots. The par-3 17 hole saw only four birdies all day, yet Bundaberg found a way to secure a much- needed birdie thanks to Tim Russell, who drained a monster 50 foot putt to put himself within reach of personal back-to-back Volkswagen Scramble victories.

Leigh learns a lesson from watching the Masters

“Augusta is a subtle course,” Leigh explained. “You need to be able to draw the ball, fade it and, sometimes, hit it straight. And the preferred landing area on some holes is very small. “But deChambeau is a big, powerful man. He gets himself into position, pauses, then goes all out. “He’s got complete trust in his swing and just goes for it. I like that. “He’s really well balanced and hits straight through the ball,” Leigh said. Frank Chong (right) congratulates Leigh Lasek on his extraordinary round of 47 stableford points at Maroochy River He went on to explain that he picked up a tip from watching deChambeau – something about keeping his left arm straight, coming through on a nice plane, and rotating through the swing.

Borrowed pants save the day for Backwell

Richard Backwell took out the Maroochy River Legends Pro-Am. Golf Peter Owen Premium Content Subscriber only Though it’s much more casual than the usual professional golf tours – players are allowed to wear shorts, for example, and ride in carts – Australia’s Legends Tour still abides by some longstanding traditions. One is that winners must wear long pants at the presentation. And that presented a problem for Richard Backwell, whose round of four under-par 68 earned him the title at Friday’s Maroochy River Legends Pro-Am. Richard Backwell, in his borrowed long pants, delivers his victory speech. Backwell had given so little thought to his chances of winning that he turned up at Maroochy River in just his shorts and golf shirt, and had to borrow trousers from a fellow pro, who had a spare pair in his car.
