Highland High School was the center of the wrestling world in southeast Iowa Saturday as the Huskies hosted their annual Gary Curtis Invitational. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks posted the best team score of any area squad with 139.5 points, in fifth. South Tama won the tournament with 173 points. Mid-Prairie crowned three champions on the day. Vinnie Bowlin brought home the title at 160lbs with a fall over Kaden Shirk of Wilton. Cael Garvey took the title at 195 with a fall over Johnathan Lilly of Wilton and Josh Wallington was the champion at 220, beating Logan Wright of West Branch by 16-5 major decision in the title bout.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk grapplers begin the second half of the schedule tonight when they travel to Northeast Goose Lake for a River Valley Conference quadrangular against Camanche, Bellevue and the Rebels. Mid-Prairie comes into the 2021 portion of their schedule with a 4-6 dual record. The Hawks were last in dual action December 17th when they visited Mount Pleasant for a triangular with the Panthers and Ft. Madison. Mid-Prairie split at the event, beating the Panthers and falling to the Bloodhounds. Coming into the second half of the season, Mid-Prairie is led by a pair of 17 match winners in Ben Meader and Josh Wallington, with a combined 34-6 mark on the year.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk junior varsity and girls portion of their wrestling team will travel to Eldridge today for the North Scott Invitational. Overall, the Hawks took a 4-6 dual record into Christmas break after splitting their final triangular of 2020 with a win over Mount Pleasant and a loss to Fort Madison. In tournament action, the Golden Hawk boys closed the first part of the schedule at Central DeWitt where they finished seventh of 13 teams with a score 92 points. Josh Wallington was crowned champion at 220lbs after a major decision championship match win. The Golden Hawk girls were in tournament action at Wilton right before the holidays, where the Hawks had Sarah Meader in Division 13 and Bronwyn Brenneman in Division Seven capture titles. The Golden Hawk girls have a pair of ranked wrestlers on the team with Mia Garvey at No. 6 at 138lbs and Meader No. 5 at 152lbs, according to the first poll of the season from iawrestle.com.
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team wrapped up the pre-Christmas dual portion of their schedule with a trip to Mount Pleasant for a non-conference triangular with the Panthers and Fort Madison Bloodhounds. The Golden Hawks won a dual and dropped a dual on the night. The Golden Hawks beat Mount Pleasant 45-34. Mid-Prairie got wins in contested matches from Owen Trimpe at 152 by fall, Ben Meader at 182 by fall, Josh Wallington at 220 by fall and Gannon Callahan at 285 by fall.
Fort Madison was able to get by the Hawks 54-30. In the dual, Mid-Prairie had wins in contested matches from Mose Yoder at 113 by fall, Ben Meader at 182 by fall, and Cael Garvey at 195 by fall. Mid-Prairie is now into the Christmas break portion of their schedule with a 4-6 dual record.
