The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) hosted local First Nations people, media and the general public, as crews from SNC Lavalin undergo a search for unmarked graves using ground penetrating radar. BATC announced their plans for the search in June.

A smudge ceremony was carried out for everyone stepping onto the site, with Elders and mental health counsellors on site for support. Elder Jenny Spyglass spoke of her time at the school and the pain that still lingers.
“This is where they took my culture away,” she said. “They took my language away from me. They took that love away from my mom. A two-or three-year-old girl would love to have their mom with them every day, every morning, feeding them, loving them. I didn’t have that, growing up.”

Rushton added that it’s important to know your limitations.
“Have some safety equipment if you’re not a good swimmer,” she said. “Put on a life jacket before you go in and let your friends know that you will stay closer to shallow water.”
Water incidents rare, but safety important
Safety tips for swimmers are equally important for those on boats. Cst. Mark Burnett of the Battlefords RCMP detachment said they typically deal with two or three incidents a summer between the local rivers and lakes. Their deployment tends to be related to isolated boaters or people that were supposed to have made it back to shore being reported missing.

This Fourth of July, America will celebrate its 245th birthday and there are celebrations planned all over the metro.
This is year 49 for Edmond’s LibertyFest and chairman Bob Meinders said it’s a big weekend for the city.
“July 3rd we’ve got the parade in the morning and park fest in the afternoon. And then it all culminates with the fireworks being shot on the 4th which is Sunday. The show will start a little after 9:30,” Meinders said.
Fireworks will be launched from Hafer Park, but the park will be completely closed all day on Sunday.
