GASB 202 is problematic, but not for the reasons many think

It’s now April, and we are quickly approaching six months after the battle that was the 2020 election. And while the Biden administration and Democrats attempt to move forward with their agenda, Republicans across the country have made their displeasure clear. One of the groups of Republicans not happy with the result of the 2020 election is the Georgia Republicans.
Who could blame them? Not only did Georgians vote for a Democratic presidential candidate, the first time since 1992, but they also elected two Democratic senators, one being the first Black person to win a statewide race in Georgia’s history.

DUNWOODY, Ga. â A legislative proposal granting municipalities regulatory authority over the discharge of bows and arrows within their jurisdictions saw little movement during the Georgia General Assembly session that adjourned at midnight March 31.Â
House Bill 471, sponsored by Reps. Josh McLaurin (D-Sandy Springs), Wes Cantrell (R-Woodstock), Angelika Kausche (D-Johns Creek) and Miriam Paris (D-Macon), was introduced and referred to the House Game, Fish and Parks Committee. The bill has not moved since Feb. 18.
The current text would give municipalities power to adopt reasonable ordinances regulating the use of bows and arrows in their jurisdiction, while protecting their use on private property. State law supersedes most local regulations on deer hunting. State law also requires the hunter to have a permit. Â The statutes of most area cities outlaw the use of weapons within local parks, including bow and arrows or crossbows.

Georgia’s new election law SB 202, which many experts decried as an attack on the fundamental fairness of the state’s elections, was compared to Jim Crow by many leading Democrats. Now some observers are pushing back, arguing the bill falls well short of a democratic apocalyptic.
In the New York Times, Nate Cohn concluded that “the law’s voting provisions are unlikely to significantly affect turnout or Democratic chances.” Slate’s Will Saletan notes that some provisions really are troubling, but that the bill also contains good provisions and that critics have “overhyped” their concerns. Brian Riedl, a senior fellow at the conservative Manhattan Institute, writes that “the idea this is an epic war on voting rights is simply absurd.”
