In Watertown, you can find Zoo NY nestled among the trees at the top of Thompson Park. The zoo, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this August, features only animals that are currently or once were native to New York state. Zoo spokesman Josh Baughn said that education plays a central role to its mission.
âWeâre not a traditional zoo,â he said. âWe donât consider ourselves to be a concrete jungle, as some zoos may seem to other folks. Our facility is very concerned with ensuring education happens, that weâre helping teach families and young kids about New Yorkâs wildlife.â

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - With Thursday having been Earth Day, and this weekend being so beautiful, Zoo New York put on itâs 51st annual Earth Day Celebration.
Zoo officials say they werenât able to celebrate last year, so they wanted this yearâs celebration to be extra special!
Families flocking to the zoo could enjoy live music, crafts, a hotdog picnic, raffles, and plenty of educational opportunities.
Different environmental groups from the area came out to teach guests about conservation and the importance of our native plants and animals.

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - Are you feeling bitter this Valentine’s Day? Maybe you have an ex still on your mind? Zoo New York had a solution.
It was a fundraiser, and for five bucks, you could name a cockroach after your ex and have it fed to the animals.
Sunday, zoo workers drew 15 names for a live feeding on Facebook. Those cockroach snacks, for some zoo chickens- Midnight, Hai Hai, Lavendar and Duck.
