(WBTV) - The community is mourning after a Mount Holly police officer was fatally shot near a Gaston County car wash Friday morning. Tyler Avery Herndon, 25, was one of several officers responding to a breaking and entering call around 3:30 a.m. off Beatty Drive. When officers encountered the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Joshua Tyler Funk, several shots were fired. Herndon was shot and taken to the hospital, where he died several hours later.

A Mount Holly officer has died after exchanging gunfire with a breaking and entering suspect at a car wash in Gaston County early Friday morning, according to police. WCNC Charlotte reports the shooting occurred just before 4 a.m. at the Mount Holly Car Wash on Beatty Drive after officers engaged with a suspect, identified as Joshua Tyler Funk. According to authorities, several shots were fired between the suspect and officers. The officer was pronounced dead at CaroMount Hospital in Gastonia. The suspect, who is facing charges, suffered minor injuries, according to authorities.
