Florida had a big NFL Draft weekend, coming one short of tying the school’s seven-round record with eight players selected. Several more got free agent contracts shortly after the final round ended, giving the pro ranks a fresh infusion of Gators.
UF had ten players selected in 1978 when the draft stretched on to 12 rounds, though just half of them went in the first seven rounds. The 2010 Draft, featuring much of the core of the 2008-09 teams that went a combined 26-2, had nine players.
In the intervening years, Florida has had eight guys taken four times now. How does the 2021 group compare to the others? Glad you asked. I used a weighted system that assigns seven points for first rounders down to one point for seventh rounders to standardize a way to look at them to see how this latest draft class stacks up.

At irregular intervals over the last few years, I’ve tried to project the playing time of Cowboys rookie classes, with varying levels of success.
In 2015, the estimate was wildly over-optimistic in projecting 3,000 snaps for a rookie class that ended up playing just 2,291 combined snaps, or 10% of the total offensive and defensive snaps that year.
In 2018, the projection was the rookie class would play 12.1% (2,838) of all offensive and defensive snaps, and it was a pleasant surprise to find that was very close: The 2018 rookies played exactly 12.1% (2.786) of all snaps.

Florida has added two players from the transfer portal since the 2020 season ended, and both are interior defensive linemen. First was Antonio Shelton from Penn State last week, and then yesterday Orlando native DaQuan Newkirk came over from Auburn.
With Kyree Campbell having already announced for the NFL Draft and both Tedarrell Slaton and Marlon Dunlap having walked on Senior Day, it seems likely that the Gators will lose all three senior defensive tackles from last year’s team. Campbell’s periodic absences revealed just how thin UF was at the spot to begin with, as there was a dramatic difference between him being available and not. Now, it appears that they’ll lose everyone with more than two seasons of experience on the team.
