Data shows that COVID-19 cases and test positivity rates are trending downwards in the county, and access to the vaccine is increasing. With proper mitigation strategies, health officials say schools can reopen safely. MCPS held a media tour at Farquhar Middle school in Olney on Tuesday to showcase what learning will look like when students come back next week.

County: 99.6% of Vaccine First Doses Received Have Been Administered The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services has received a total of 27,000 first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine so far. Local health officials say 99.6 % of that total have been administered as of Jan. 21. During his weekly COVID-19 virtual media briefing on Thursday, County Executive Marc Elrich stressed ongoing issues regarding vaccine allotments from the state. He says although there’s a shortage, the doses are rolling out as the county gets them. “We need a larger allocation from the state to meet our population,” said Elrich. Elrich: ‘We Don’t Have Any Unused Vaccines Lying Around’ Montgomery County has received 19,800 doses of the Moderna vaccine – and administered 14,952 of those as of Thursday. Local health officials say all of the allotted doses are expected to be administered by Friday, Jan. 15. The county is currently in Phase 1A for vaccine distribution, consisting of frontline health care workers, staff and residents of nursing homes, and first responders. Montgomery County Deputy Health Officer Dr. James Bridgers says the county will likely continue through Phase 1 for the next couple of weeks, depending on the number of doses allotted from the state.
