Bennett backpedals after appearing to say Jews free to pray on Temple Mount

A member of the Israeli security forces stands guard as a group of Jews enters the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, during the annual Tisha B Av fast day, on July 18, 2021. (Ahmad Gharabli/AFP) Unnamed officials in the office of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Monday walked back comments that appeared to mark a stark shift from Israel’s policy of maintaining the status quo at Jerusalem’s flashpoint Temple Mount, now asserting that the premier had meant both Jews and Muslims have “freedom of visitation rights” at the holy site. Despite Bennett’s phrasing, the status quo holds, according to an official in the prime minister’s office who was not authorized to speak publicly and demanded anonymity.
