lbradstream@timesrepublican.com CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS The Marshall County supervisors appointed Joel Phillips as the new Marshall County Sheriff and Jordan Gaffney as the new Marshall County Attorney during the regular Tuesday meeting. The appointments went into effect immediately. Both positions will be on the November 2022 general election ballot. The Marshall County Board of Supervisors was busy at the regular Tuesday meeting, even though the meeting was relatively short. First, they appointed Joel Phillips as the new Marshall County Sheriff, which took effect immediately. He will serve in the role until November 2022 and then will be up for election. “It was an interesting and good time we had going through the interviews,” Supervisor Bill Patten said. “Joel’s background and his work gives him an edge because he’s done this before. We’re excited to have Joel.”

He has served under former sheriffs Steve Hoffman, who resigned on Monday, and Ted Kamatchus. There is a new sheriff in town and it is Joel Phillips. During a regular meeting on Tuesday, the Marshall County Board of Supervisors chose Phillips. The decision was made after Steve Hoffman resigned from the position on March 15, and accepted a job as a chief for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Prior to leaving, Hoffman provided Chief Deputy Joel Phillips with some training on duties of the sheriff, which Phillips was already familiar with as he would serve as acting sheriff when Hoffman was gone. Phillips submitted his application for the sheriff’s position, along with two other candidates, who chose to remain anonymous. Times-Republican The Marshall County Board of Supervisors will meet on Monday to converse about the candidates for the Marshall County Sheriff and Marshall County Attorney. Auditor Nan Benson said the supervisors will discuss the sheriff candidates at 10 a.m., followed by the attorney candidates at 10:30 a.m. It will be a closed session, she said. The supervisors interviewed three candidates for the sheriff on April 1, and one of them was acting Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips. However, since that day, Benson said one of the candidates has removed themself from the running. She said there are two candidates for the attorney’s position.
