Police officers today had to disperse a crowd in Kondele that had lined up the Kisumu-Kakamega highway to meet him.
Some of the residents said they were excited about seeing the President “live”.
At 11.40am, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s motorcade snaked its way to the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.
But the police had to break the swelling crowd using teargas and clubs as boda boda reflector jackets created a green wave in the dust.
Some people themselves trampled on the ground as the crowd scampered.
They also provided handwashing points and walked around the terraces to ensure people maintained social distancing.
This was however short-lived as they were overwhelmed.
And when it was time for entertainment, people danced freely despite recent reports of the county becoming one of the new Covid-19 hot spots
At Kondele and Kisumu main bus terminus, the public turned up in numbers to cheer the dignitaries convoys heading to the event venue.
Police had to use tear gas at Kondele to disperse a surging crowd as Deputy President William Ruto and other leaders waved from their vehicles sunroof.
This happened despite a directive by Governor Anyang Nyong o that the public follows the event from their homes.

Deputy President William Ruto has said time is ripe for Kenyans to enter the second phase of politics grounded on constitutionalism and not personalities.
Speaking during the 58th year Madaraka Day celebrations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu on Tuesday, Ruto paid tribute to the painful and bloody sacrifices made by champions of independence across the country unified by their common goal of self-rule.
In a short, speech mostly applauding the president and his government, the deputy president reminded Kenyans that for Kenya to succeed, it should not be built on, “the foundation of tribes or ethnicity but built on the foundation of institutions, a robust legislature, a performing executive and an independent judiciary.”
