July 11, 1872: The Herald and Tribune reported, “On last Thursday, the new Hotel at Johnson City, was struck by lightning. Several persons were severely shocked, but no one seriously injured. The lightning struck several other points in the city and vicinity.” The Herald and Tribune was, and still is, is a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead of the paper in 1872. Inside the pages of the paper, readers could also see the town spelled as Jonesboro’. July 11, 1906: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported on a new industry. “A charter for the Watauga Knitting Mills has been secured with L. Whitney Wood, Frank Taylor, L.P. Wood, T.A. Cox and E.J. Vaught as charter members.”

50 years ago: The July 8, 1971, edition of The AJT featured an article entitled, “Scottish Tournament Set Friday at Grandfather.” The most unique golf contest to be held anywhere in many years will be staged Friday afternoon at Grandfather Golf and Country Club’s championship course. The event will be an invitational “Old Scottish Golf Tournament,” which will be placed as near as feasible to the way the sport originated in Scotland. The competitors, scheduled to be attired in kilts, will be seeking to claim an ancient golf club as the winner’s trophy. The initial Old Scottish tournament has been established by Grandfather Golf and Country Club as a separate but most appropriate kickoff for Saturday and Sunday’s Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans at Grandfather Mountain. July 7, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported an exhibition would take place at the Fall Branch High School. The event would be on July 13 “if the weather is fair, if not on the following Tuesday. The friends of this Institution and the public generally are respectfully invited to attend.” Z.B. Lockwood was the principal of the Fall Branch High School. The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1866. July 7, 1887: According to The Comet, “Capt. S.T. Harris has purchased the Al Lyle corner, opposite the Hoss House, and as soon as he can get possession will erect a handsome bank building.
