Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass progress as viaduct beams in place

WORK to install bridge beams as part of a project to build two viaducts as part of the Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass has now been completed. Balfour Beatty Jones Bros Joint Venture is delivering the £135m bypass which is one of the largest infrastructure projects underway in North Wales. The 9.8km bypass will run from the Goat roundabout on the A499-A487 junction to the Plas Menai roundabout around Llanwnda, Dinas, Bontnewydd and Caernarfon. The scheme will deliver improved travel times, reduce congestion and improve air quality on local roads, and lead to more opportunities for active travel. Another key milestone has been reached as surfacing work is now beginning on the bypass near the Cibyn Industrial Estate in Caernarfon.

Elliot Bidmead has been named most promising trainee engineer (graduate) by The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Wales

A GRADUATE trainee with Ruthin-based civil engineering company Jones Bros has won a prestigious industry award. Elliot Bidmead, 29, from Ruthin, was named most promising trainee engineer (graduate) by The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Wales. CECA Wales represents 60 of Wales’ largest and smallest civil engineering contracting businesses with a cumulative annual turnover in excess of £1bn and employing more than 6,000 people. The organisation had been due to hold a ceremony to reveal the award winners in April last year, but chose to announce the winners online, after the original event was cancelled due to the pandemic. Elliot joined the Jones Bros trainee engineer apprenticeship scheme aged 17. He initially spent nine months at the National Construction College in Norfolk, gaining a national diploma in construction and an NVQ level 3.

Company praised for using local workers and suppliers

Rhydian Hafal, Jones Bros construction manager, said: “It’s really important for us to be able to ensure the positive impact of our work is as big as it can be, and using local suppliers who know the lay of the land is one of the best ways of doing that.  “We will continue to work hard to engage suppliers who are based close to the site.”  PJ Thory has been delivering locally sourced aggregate to the site.  Martin Ash, sales manager at PJ Thory, said: “It’s really important for us to be involved in this project as we work in the area that will benefit most from the new route.
