More Than 160 Unmarked Graves Found Near Indigenous Canadian School

The western Canadian Penelakut Tribe says it has found more than 160 unmarked graves near the site of a former indigenous boarding school, Canada s fourth discovery of this kind in recent weeks.
In the last month, discoveries of more than 1,000 graves prompted a nationwide reckoning over Canada s painful past and its policies of forced assimilation toward indigenous communities. We are at another point in time where we must face the trauma because of these acts of genocide, said Penelakut Tribe Chief Joan Brown in a July 8 statement confirming 160+ undocumented and unmarked graves newly-uncovered on the British Columbia reservation.

La cadena de televisión CTV señaló que una antiguo empleado de la residencia escolar de la Isla Kuper, el religioso de la orden de los Misioneros Oblatos de María Inmaculada Glenn Doughty, fue condenado en 1991 a cuatro años de prisión por abusos sexuales cometidos 30 años antes contra cuatro niños indígenas en otra residencia escolar.
The Penelakut Tribe have issued a letter saying the graves were found on the grounds of the former residential school on what is now known as Penelakut Island between Vancouver Island and mainland B.C., about 78 miles (126 kilometers) southwest of Vancouver. We understand that many of our brothers and sisters from our neighboring communities attended the Kuper Island Industrial School, said the letter from Chief Joan Brown. We also recognize with a tremendous amount of grief and loss, that too many did not return home.
The Kuper Island Indian Industrial School was operated by the Roman Catholic Church from 1890 until 1969, when the federal government took it over. The school was closed in 1975 and the building was demolished in the 1980s.
