The mural-like image of George Floyd clings to a utility box on the lawn across Francis Street from the north end of Providence Place.  It is enduring evidence of the fervor that swept into Providence after the death of the Minnesota man on May 25, 2020.   The location, adjacent to both the mall and to the Rhode Island State House, was a focal point for local reaction to Floyd’s death under a Minneapolis police officer s knee one year ago today.   The area attracted thousands of peaceful activists who loudly demanded social justice and brought attention to progressive proposals for curbing the resources and power of police officers.

And advocates for police reform who testified during a Monday hearing said the bill stands in the way of accountability, hampering police chiefs and public safety leaders from adequately disciplining officers for misconduct, and shielding departments from public scrutiny.

Joseph Hanley, a 17 year veteran of the force who was charged and found guilty of simple assault, said the group. And the new chairwoman of the caucus, Representative Karen Alzate, said the members are looking to convert the power in those numbers into legislative victories to help communities of color.
